Sylvan Droplet Variation - Music

“Sylvan Droplet Variations” William Neal and Neal Williams

First shown at the Faed Gallery, The Mill on the Fleet, Gatehouse of Fleet Dumfriesshire. September 2009

Dreaming wasn’t taught at my primary school which was a great shame, since it seemed I had a head start over many of my friends, instead, life was a miserable academic chore, relieved by sports, painting, and playtime. A remarkable change came when I was about 12 or 13 at secondary school.  Our art master Mr Burgess, said “I would like you to put down what comes to your mind when you listen to this” He put on “Peter and the Wolf “ by Prokofiev. This proved to be a defining moment in my life, I had always enjoyed painting, but this was an added dimension, I had made a connection, visible, audible, tangible, plausible, incredible! It soon became very apparent to me that from a personal level, onto a much wider communicative one, the possiblities within this interplay had enormous potential.

Neal Williams

Neal Williams was born in Atlanta, GA, USA and took up music at a very early age.  He played bass in a jazz band before moving into more experimental music.  He is a multi instrumentalist playing guitar, bass, drums, banjo, piano, bells and electronics.

The ability to imbue an apparent minimalist sound with such a tranquil and subtle spirit is one thing, giving it depth and subtle expectancy is something else, yet Neal has that remarkable gift. Speaking as an artist, I hope the observer will view my paintings and gain something new each time. Neal Williams’ music has that rare quality in abundance.”

William Neal

This concept was a natural progression from “Sylvan Droplet” on “Marginal Movements” hence its inclusion as a bonus track on the cd.

The painting grew from a number of works by Neal that eventually became one unified journey, featuring the life of a Droplet.  Essentially its an observation that covers the birth and demise of a seemingly simple occurence.  Realm of Droplet, Circlearama, Banjo Frogs, Voyage of Ripple, Culmination and Dissipation. A disciplined minimal work, with subtle growth, by far one of the most relaxed movements I have ever heard. Do not play this in the car, unless you have parked up!”
